South Solitary Island 1
Located off the Mid North Coast of NSW Australia, it is the most distant from the coast and only one of two island lighthouses in NSW.
The original buildings were built in 1880 and housed 2 families – 1 person died on the island.
The lighthouse was automated in 1975. The keepers cottages have been abandoned since 1975.
Access to the island is only by helicopter and restricted by National Parks & Wildlife.
National Parks opened the building for public access for 1 weekend in August 2008 – 226 people were lucky enough to visit the island. In July 2009 there were 335 visitors!
The buildings will be opened again in 2010- contact PrecisionHelicopters for further info
